Help us Recognise International Wheelchair Day this March 1
International Wheelchair Day promotes understanding and knowledge about mobility solutions and disability rights. There is still much to do to create accessible environments for all in Australia.
International Wheelchair Day was founded in 2008, by Steven Wilkinon, an advocate for wheelchair users. In Steve’s lifetime, he created a global movement that celebrates the positive impact of wheelchairs, recognises the people who provide and support mobility solutions and raises awareness for the millions of people still in need of an appropriate wheelchair. Having passed away in 2024, Steve’s vision and legacy is as strong as ever, with International Wheelchair Day ensuring accessibility, inclusion, and mobility remain a global priority.
Equally as important as having access to a wheelchair, is having access to the right wheelchair! This is where those who provide and prescribe wheelchairs, and those who provide support and care for wheelchair users are recognised.
Whether it is an occupational therapist doing a functional capacity assessment and recommending different assistive technologies, or the support workers and coordinators around a client recognising and advocating for the need of an improved mobility aid, these community members make the world a better and more accessible place for people with mobility issues.
This International Wheelchair Day we look to:
- Celebrate the positive impact wheelchairs and wheelchair accessibility have on the lives of wheelchair users
- Recognise the importance of an individual having the RIGHT wheelchair to support their mobility difficulties
- Celebrate the incredible work of those who provide wheelchairs, provide support and care for wheelchair users, and those advocating for making a more accessible Australia for all
- Acknowledge that there are still many people in the world who need a wheelchair, but do not have access, or only have access to a wheelchair that does not match their mobility issues
