How I work

Get to know Tom O

How can you support people?

As a psychologist, Tom is able to provide people with mental health support through therapy and assessment pathways either individually or as a part of a wider multidisciplinary team.

Tom’s role as a therapist aims to employ a blend of evidence-based, scientifically backed techniques (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT, psychodynamic) that emphasise fostering autonomy, self-respect, self-compassion, and understanding about your own mental health, and to develop solutions that help you to manage and overcome difficulties you are experiencing in this area.

Tom can also provide a wide range of psychological assessments including neurodivergence (e.g., ADHD and ASD), cognitive/memory, functional, learning disorders, career, mood, and more.

How does your background shape the way you work?

Tom has working experience across a number of sectors, including retail, charity, communications, research, and education prior to entering the mental health sector, which has helped him learn through a broad base of skills outside of the traditional mental health traditions.

Tom also often draws upon his own extensive life experience in the mental health space. Tom is neurodivergent (ADHD), and earlier in his life experienced chronic depression, anxiety, alexithymia, and addiction. Tom also grew up around others with bipolar, autism, epilepsy, trauma, and a number of other chronic health issues. Having personally been on a similar journey to many of the people he now works with, Tom approaches his role with understanding and compassion for all as his top priorities.

What is your approach to working with people?

Tom aims to enhance his clients’ self-awareness and understanding through therapy, assessment, psychoeducation, and empowerment, while nurturing their readiness and motivation – guiding individuals towards actioning change.
